I guess if you ask “is there such thing as a perfect person?” I’m sure your answer will be a big NO.
Nobody is perfect. So I can safely say the same thing when it comes to dogs.
But there are some pretty “great people” out there, not perfect, just great. Likewise, I’m sure there are many “great” dogs as well.
The good news is, you get train one yourself!
Most people's real idea of a perfect dog, in no particular order, will probably, include all of the following 5 important behaviors:
- Calm and easy around other dogs or animals
- Friendly to all including children
- Relaxed and obedient at home
- Comes immediately when called at the park
- A real angel when walking on the leash in public

Now, before you get excited about sending your puppy school to some kind of S.W.A.T. training school learning how to jump through a fiery hoop, do two-legged stand or the commando-style crawl, consider this…
Is that what you want your dog to? Do you want it to be a circus item that you can show off when your friends and family members drop by so that you can hear them say “Wow that’s cool, very clever” or “How did you train him to do that…”
But then, the next thing you have to do is warn the visitors “not to go near his food bowl when he’s eating” or “to be careful when patting him” or “to keep the children away from his toys”.
No more fun there, isn’t it?
With so much time and effort spent on how to do command such as sit and stay, we overlook on some of the really important stuff. And very often when we do, it's often too late.
Why this is so?
Because most dog trainers are often focused on doing what everyone else is doing such as training the dog to sit, down and the stay!
Everyone follows another and nobody asks WHY?
Think about this, has a dog ever been put to sleep (yes, I am talking about euthanized) because they didn't do a proper sit? Or because their down command was a bit slow? Or because they had a poor stay?
Of course not, silly me.
But that’s what dogs are trained in puppy school.
