How To Quickly Stop Excessive Dog Barking

Dogs are great for companionship and to guarding and protecting properties but it becomes a big problem when they bark too much and too frequently.

It can cause lots of problems for pet owners. Neighbors get irritated, postman get scared away, leads to neighborhood unrest and, occasionally, even lawsuits

Dog barks. Period. There's nothing you can do about it. The key is in the excessive barking and finding the causes and solution to stop that excessive barking.

What You Should Avoid

First of all, stop yelling at your dog to ‘Stop Barking’ or ‘Be Quiet’ because this may actually cause them to bark even more. When you do that, you're giving him more attention. Some dogs find that this attention is better than none at all.

Try avoiding shock collars. They are painful, and can actually make your dog more aggressive toward the person or other dog that they may be barking at. Avoid it if you can or find other means that is less distressing for your dogs.

Tips On How To Stop Your Dog From Excessive Barking

Start with dog training basics - Call training

Teach your dog to come when called. Start when you can almost sure that your dog will come, not when they are barking. Begin without any distractions, and always ensure that positive reward is given every time your dog comes when called, never anything negative.

If your dog starts running after something and barking and does not come when called, go get him instead of calling him to come.  Start all over again.

Call training when dog is barking

Once you've got the response you wanted, i.e. the dog comes when he's called, the next step is to call your dog to come when they are barking. Once he comes, give him positive attention and a treat. You intention is to lower his anxiety, decrease the adrenalin flow which is caused by the barking.

Maintain the pattern of calling when he barks and when he comes, praising and giving a treat, and petting him consistently every time there is barking you want to stop. You purpose here is to condition him.

Keep your dog away from stimulus

Keep your dog away from the places where he barks, in other words, keep him away from the stimulus. For example, if your dog constantly barks when he's outside, then avoid this trigger by keeping him inside, especially while you are retraining.

Exercises helps dog calm down

Adequate exercise helps resolve many canine behavioral problems. Make it a priority to exercise your dog for at least 30 minutes twice a day. Incorporate the call training command while walking them. Also have them retrieve or run as this increases the heart rate and helps produce the calming hormones that reduces barking.

Use bark spray collars

You can use bark spray collars (i.e. citronella spray collar) if your dog resists training, is outside unsupervised for a period of time and still barks a lot. The collar emits a spray of non toxic citronella in response to the noise of the barking, and causes them to stop immediately and doesn't make them in any way aggressive.

Apply therapeutic touch

A type of therapeutic touch called Tellington Touch may help ease your barking dog. The most effective area is the ear. Gently hold the ear flap between your thumb and forefinger, stroke from the base of the ear to the tip and repeat the motion several times covering different sections of the ear. Also try rubbing gently by drawing tiny circles at the base of the ear.

Try both of the techniques on your dog when he is calm. If he reacts well, then try it the next time he is barking.

Try anti-anxiety supplements

There are also many over the counter anti-anxiety supplements that you can use. The most popular one is one called Calm Pet. Bach Rescue Remedy is also another safe alternative medication that calms your anxious pet.

Use as directed on the label.

Excessive dog barking really can be controlled once you understand why. The causes are varied, but ultimately you must accept that it is just a way dog is. It just needs to bark when it’s appropriate.

At What Age is a Child Old Enough to Walk the Dog Alone?

Kids in the age range of 12-16 can take a great deal of responsibility for the care and training of a puppy or a well-trained older dog.

Puppy Care and Training

They can feed, groom, train and clean up after the puppy. They can let the puppy in and out of the crate. Most children in this age range can handle the puppy independently in a group obedience class (while a parent observes) and can continue as the puppy grows older and stronger. Behaviour specialist Teresa Lewin suggests that a child is old enough to handle a dog independently when the dog respects and obeys the child, when the child can read the dog, predict an impending problem and can intervene appropriately. This will occur at different ages and depends on the maturity of the child, the relationship the child has developed with the dog and the temperament and level of training of the dog.

Walking the Dog Alone

Some kids age 12-16 will be safe walking the dog in the neighbourhood without adult supervision. This depends on the maturity of the child and a number of factors. According to Teresa Lewin of Doggone Safe, some basic criteria must be met:

·            The dog knows how to walk on a loose leash and this behaviour is reliable
·            The child can read the dog’s body language
·            The child and dog have a mutually respectful relationship
·            The dog will happily and willingly follow directions from the child
·            The dog has never shown any sign of aggression toward people or other dogs
·            The dog does not chase cars, cats, or other animals
·            The child knows how to interpret situations and take appropriate action.

In addition, the size and strength of the dog relative to the child must be taken into consideration. The child should be strong enough to control the dog if the dog did decide to bolt or pull hard on the leash. Another consideration is the situation in the neighbourhood with respect to other dogs. If there are loose dogs, or dogs that act aggressively on the walk route, then the child should take a different route or not walk the dog without an adult.

Make it a Family Event

Better still, make walking the dog a daily family event. This has many benefits for the family as well as the dog.

Childhood Dog Bite Survey

One of the goals of Doggone Safe is to help dog bite victims and provide support for families. The majority of dog bite victims recover well both physically and emotionally. In most cases the bite does not do serious damage and no-one thinks much of it. In some cases the emotional effects can be as serious or more serious than the physical effects. We are interested in knowing more about childhood dog bite incidence and the lasting emotional effects.

Please help us out by taking this short survey about childhood dog bites as viewed from adulthood. We want your answers whether you were bitten as a child or not. If you were not bitten by a dog as a child, we want to know that too. In that case you will only have one question to answer and you will be done!

What do I do to get my pet to eat again?

Dog won't eatWhen a dog won’t eat, it is referred to as anorexia, which simply means a complete loss of appetite. This can indicate illness. They can include a sore tooth, an abscess or even cancer. It is important to seek veterinary care if you notice changes in your dog’s eating habits.

Your pets may suddenly eat much less than usual or it can be that they completely stops eating. If this persists, then they will become lethargic and weak. You should not wait until this happens.

There are many possible causes. What's important here is to get your dog eating again before a 24 hour period of anorexia to avoid further complications. This is especially important for cats, if unattended to, will develop a condition known as ‘Fatty Liver’ if they go on for 48 hours or more without eating.

For dogs, even though they can go a couple of days without food without significant repercussions, it is best to address the problem as early as possible. Here are some specific suggestions for you to consider:

SEE YOUR VETERINARIAN

If your pet is very lethargic, not eating or drinking and becoming dehydrated, then them to your veterinarian immediately. Your veterinarian will perform all the necessary diagnostic tests and if necessary, this may lead to force feeding of your pet or placing in some type of feeding tube.

TRY WARMING UP THE FOOD AND ADD FLAVOR

Dogs and sick cats often have a poorer sense of smell. Some owners reported of getting their pets to eat by warming up the canned food, then making it a little more tasty by adding garlic powder, beef or chicken cubes.

CATNIP

An appetite stimulant. In this case, you are just trying to get your dog or cat to start eating, regardless of the underlying cause. For cats, some owners have had luck using a the catnip herb by giving it as a tincture to anorexic cats and had them eating soon.

CHAMOMILE OR PEPPERMINT

These are anti-vomiting herbs which can be given as a tea. At the very least this can help re-hydrate your dog or cat. Make a herbal tea of either herb and give 1 tablespoon per 10 lbs  every 4-6 hours.

ALFALFA

For general anorexia not linked to any underlying cause, look at homeopathic alfalfa – you can give one 30C tab per 20 lbs 4 times daily.

Be patient with your pets and watch them closely for signs of illness. Work with your veterinarian if you are concerned about their health. Time, self-discipline and consistency will do well to get them to eat again.

Is a Natural Treatment for Kennel Cough Right for Your Pet?

Kennel Cough Symptoms and TreatmentWhen your pet is suffering from what is known as "Kennel Cough", finding a quick and effective treatment for it will become a priority, otherwise your family won't rest in peace. That's because the affliction can be quite bothersome. There has been much discussion on what exactly caused Kennel Cough. Some believe it is from a virus, others believe it is caused by a bacteria known as Biordatella Bronchiseptica

This disease primarily affects the trachea of the dog, the minor irritation caused in the trachea leads to the loud, hacking cough by the poor dog, which is the main symptom for kennel cough diagnosis. This can be can sound very worrisome at times, but there is no need to be overly concerned though. However, the only sure way to have peace in your home is by making sure that your dog receive a treatment

There are a few basics that pet owners should know about this ailment. First, kennel cough is contagious and can easily be spread among pets in close proximity with the sick dog. Second, this disease affects dogs of all ages. Breed does not play a factor but a pet with a weaker immune system is exposed to the higher risk of contracting kennel cough.

Most pet owners will turn to home remedies when treating kennel cough. There is some controversy whether these remedies are effective or not. But for those who believe they are not, it would be beneficial to do a research on what type of home treatment will work best for your pet.  You'll find that you can apply these homeopathic remedies yourself, while ensuring your dog’s overall long-term health.

Please note that even when you're successful in using home-based treatments for kennel cough, it is still necessary to use an antibiotic for your pets. This is because if kennel cough has gone untreated for a long period, the infection in your pet may need to be addressed by some sort of anti-inflammatory medication or treatment to relieve the pain or symptoms your dog as experiencing until the infection is cleared. Also consider seeking additional immunity boosters for your pets.

Another important thing to remember is that when using homeopathic remedies, you’ll want to ensure that they do not negatively affect any additional medications your pet may be on. Some says that treatments for kennel cough offered by vets or other health organizations actually worsen the symptoms and increase the severity of your pet’s illness. This is not true because if your pet is already on different medications and has a low immune system, some of the treatments may leave a negative effect on the long term health of your pet. It is, therefore, advisable that you consult your vet before proceeding with alternative treatment and stick to one type of treatment for a period.

One final note to remember in choosing different treatments for kennel cough: If you're using the traditional kennel cough tablets as a home remedy, you may want to seek out an alternative treatment. These tablets are made of chemicals that could actually harm your pet, rather than help them. It’s would be wiser to stick to chemical-free or other natural herbs as alternatives

For the long-term and overall health of your pets, it is advisable to consider different medications, foods and treatments you offer your dog on a regular basis.
